Ian's Birth Story

I know how excited people get to share their "birth stories". I actually don't really have one. Or at least I don't have a story that is "exciting". But here it is. For various reasons, it was determined from my first OB appointment at 7 weeks that I would be having a c-section. It also worked out GREAT because he was a rather large baby. But you should all know that by now. So Ian's birth was scheduled. Of course the day was up in the air until literally 10 days before I had him (damn OB and her vacation schedule I was told...). But when November 1st arrived, I got out of bed like any regular day. Was able to do my hair. My makeup. Rubbed myself down with that weird pre-surgical scrub. Packed my bag. Watched Adam eat breakfast. We arrived at the hospital around 7:30am I think; I can't really remember actually. It was like checking into a hotel. Filled out some paperwork. Got walked down the hall to pre-op. Changed into a gown. Hopped into the bed. Fetal monitor strapped on. Then a nurse realized she was dealing with a juvenile diabetic.....drama unfolded...anesthesiologists (yes, two of them!) came in to talk to me to figure out how to handle me. (Do Type 1's never have kids, STILL?!?!) Then we sat and waited for the doctor to arrive. For like an hour. I eventually got wheeled into the OR. For some dumb reason they don't let you walk to the OR. Getting the spinal was no big deal. The coolest part was you are instantly numb and can't move. All I really remember was looking up and asking someone if the doctor was going to start soon. She replied "um, you're already open". Awesome. Ian was so big he was literally STUCK. It took several people to push on me and pull him out. I remember hearing my doctor say "OMG Meghan, he's HUGE". And a nurse yelled out "Look at the size of his head, OMG!" He was swaddled quickly, shown to me for about 10 seconds and that was the last I saw of him until 2:30pm. He was born at 10:00am. They kept him in the nursery for hours to check his blood sugar and make sure that was stable before bringing him to my room. I don't remember too much right after the C-section. I know I texted some people from the recovery room while Adam was with Ian. Then I think I slept. I had Ian on a Monday and I was home by Thursday afternoon. Within 10 days of the delivery I was completely back to normal activity. Here are some pictures of the day.

Holding Ian for the first time

The night after I had Ian, my hormones must have gone crazy. I was sweating like a pig - even when I had the temperature set to 60 degrees. Adam was very glad we brought lots of blankets!

Big boy!

Going home!
